The 17th Edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations (BS 7671:2008) has now been published and will come into effect from July 2008. From then on all commercial, domestic and industrial wiring installations must be designed to comply with BS7671:2008. Some electricians have asked why we need another Edition of the Wiring Regulations, bearing in mind the amount of reprints and amendments over the years, however a combination of new technologies, products and continuing harmonization mean that the Wiring Regulations have to incorporate changes as time goes by. City & Guilds are currently revising their existing qualifications that relate to BS 7671 and we will shortly offer a comprehensive range of new and revised qualifications. The new portfolio of qualifications, to replace 2381 are as follows: - Certificate in the Requirements for Electrical Installations (BS7671: January 2008) – 2382-10
- Certificate in the Requirements for Electrical Installations Update (BS7671: January 2008) – 2382-20
What this means in normal terms is, if your 2381 16th Edition Qualification is less than 2 years old (this has to be proven by providing necessary documentation) then you would advised to complete the 2382-20 update qualification to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the new 17th edition. If your 16th Edition Qualification was taken after 2004 and you are not a working engineer who uses the regs on a regular basis then we would advise a one day refresher prior to attending the 2382-20 update qualification. (BS7671: January 2008) – 2382-20 If you took the 16th Edition when it first came out 2001 and have not updated we would advise to attend the full 3 day 17th Edition course. (BS7671: January 2008) – 2382-10 Courses Available Jan 2008
